15 Reasons Why Wool Is the Best Material for a Pillow

Posted by Chris Larcombe on

There are many reasons why wool is the best material for a pillow. For one, wool is naturally hypoallergenic, making it ideal for those who suffer from allergies or skin sensitivities. Additionally, wool is temperature regulating, meaning it will keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Wool is highly breathable, allowing air to circulate and preventing moisture build-up that can lead to mold growth. There are so many advantages to using wool over synthetic and other materials. Below are our top 15 reasons to switch to wool pillows.

1. WASHING / CLEANING WOOL PILLOWS

With our Cloud Wool Pillow, you can simply remove the Cloud Wool filling from the inner Japara Cotton pillowcase, and chuck the pillowcase straight into your washing machine (set on cold). The most gentle way to clean the wool is to simply air dry it. Try leaving it out in the sun - Cloud Wool looooves sunlight (in small doses.)

Wool is a fabric that can be easily damaged if the correct level of care is not maintained. It is however possible to give it a light hand wash in lukewarm water. When washing wool, it is essential to use a mild detergent and avoid harsh chemicals. Wool is also sensitive to heat, so avoid using extremely hot water or placing the fabric in the dryer. Instead, opt for air drying.

2. ADJUSTABLE

When it comes to pillows we are all different. Some like more, and some like less firmness. The best part about our Cloud Wool Pillows? They are by design fully adjustable. You can add or remove as much wool fill as is needed to create the perfect pillow for you. Be mindful when buying a new Cloud Wool Pillow, that you have to knock it in by knocking something/someone with it a few times before use. You can of course gently kneel it like bread, but that's a bit boring. Chris, the founder of Kind Face, recons that hitting your 12-year-old son a few times over the head is the best recipe to break in your new Cloud Wool Pillow.

3. NATURAL & ORGANIC

Wool is often overlooked as an organic fabric, but it's actually a great choice for those looking for an eco-friendly option. Wool is a 100% natural fiber that comes from sheep. No chemicals or synthetic materials are used in the production of wool. And as you'll read more about in the point below, wool is an extremely sustainable choice of material.

4. KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT

As one of nature's most renewable resources, it's nice to know that wool is better for our planet than synthetic fibers and feathers. You are being particularly Kind to the planet when you choose wool over synthetic materials such as memory foam or polyester.

Wool is a renewable resource. Sheep are sheared annually, and their wool grows back quickly. It's good for the sheep to get sheered too, as it keeps unwanted pests off and keeps them cooler throughout the summer months.

Wool is also biodegradable. When wool garments, blankets, and pillow filling eventually wear out, they can be composted or returned to the earth without harming the environment.

5. LOCALLY PRODUCED

Be kind to New Zealand. Purchasing NZ produced products is a better choice for our economy and the environment as well since you take the strain off the supply chain of imported products.

We have partnered up with Wisewool, which produces the Cloud Wool that we use across all of our wool products. They are based in Gisborne. Here sheep are farmed like no other in the world. New Zealand is famous for its high-quality wool. Our farming methods, awesome climate, and stunning terrain make for some of the whitest and strongest wool on the planet.

6. SOFT AND COMFY

When it comes to your bed and bedding softer and comfier is always better. Wool is naturally super soft and supportive. No synthetic material get's close to wool. Down feathers are also a nice natural product to use in pillows, but are unfortunately not as sustainable and kind to the animals, as wool is. Our Cloud Wool Pillows actually feel a lot like a down feather pillow but have the BIG added advantage that you can use them guilt-free, knowing the sheep who parted with his or her wool (for your comfort) is better for it!

7. DURABLE AND LONG LASTING

Wool is durable and long-lasting. With proper care, wool products can last for many years, which reduces the need for new production (and the associated environmental impacts). If your wool filling gets a bit dated, you can always buy more Cloud Wool fill and simply top-up your existing pillow.

8. TEMPERATURE REGULATING

Wool is often thought of as a winter fabric, but it can be used year-round. Wool is temperature regulating, meaning it helps you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. A wool pillow is a great way to regulate your body temperature at night. Wool is a natural fiber that breathes and helps wick away moisture, so you stay comfortable all night long.

Did You Know This About Your Wool Pillow?

Wool is naturally flame resistant. Another great reason to choose wool.

9. FOR ALL SLEEPERS

Do you find yourself snoozing away on your side? If so, then you’re a side sleeper! Side sleepers make up about 14% of the population and many of them don’t know the special considerations they need to take for a good night’s sleep. If you’re a side sleeper, you likely already know that it can be difficult to get comfortable. Many side sleepers end up sleeping with a pillow between their legs to keep their hips aligned, but this can cause other problems like neck pain. There are a few things that side sleepers can do to make sure they get a good night’s sleep. First, it’s important to find a pillow that is supportive but not too firm, and preferably adjustable.

For back sleepers, it's important to properly support your head and neck. A wool pillow can be great for back sleepers.

Last but not least, stomach sleepers are probably the easiest to satisfy. In the case of stomach sleepers, you are almost always face down on your pillow. This can become a slight health concern if you are using a pillow that isn't washable, or one that is prone to germs, like a synthetic pillow.

No matter your sleeping position, a wool pillow will work for you.

Did You Know?

At night your immune system completely shuts off. This means you are extremely vulnerable at night. Another reason why a hygienic pillow is essential. As we know, wool is naturally germ-deterring. And also washable!

10. NATURALLY CALMING SCENT

If you're anything like us, you love the smell of a fresh, new pillow. There's nothing quite like it. But have you ever wondered why pillows smell the way they do?

Turns out, it all has to do with the material they're made from. Pillows made from natural materials like wool tend to have a stronger smell than those made from synthetic materials. This is a good thing. It's a sign that you are using something natural and healthy.

So what exactly is that wool pillow smell like? Some people say it smells like sheep, while others say it has a more earthy scent. It is a very subtle and fresh smell. Lots of our customers are in love with this subtle smell and can't sleep without it.

11. HYPOALLERGENIC

While it's not always obvious what exactly triggers your allergies, we do know that they can be incredibly irritating. Symptoms include everything from a runny nose to difficulty breathing, and unfortunately, there's no cure. However, there are ways to lessen the severity of your allergies or even get rid of them altogether. One way is by using hypoallergenic products.

Hypoallergenic products are designed to reduce the chances of an allergic reaction. They're often made with natural ingredients and are free of fragrances, dyes, and other potential irritants. If you're someone who suffers from allergies, switching to hypoallergenic products may make a world of difference.

Our Cloud Wool Pillows are 100% hypoallergenic and free from any chemicals or additives.

12. FREE FROM HARMFUL CHEMICALS

In contrast to wool, synthetic fibers are essentially plastics formed using a chemical process. Synthetic materials are made from petroleum products, which release harmful chemicals into the environment when they’re produced. And when synthetic materials are worn, those same chemicals can be released into the air and skin.

So next time you’re shopping for a pillow, be sure to check the label. If an item is made from synthetic materials, it might be best to leave it on the rack.

13. BUG-FREE

Wool is naturally resistant to dust mites, mold spores, and other harmful little critters that might find their way into your airways through your pillow. This makes wool a great choice for people with allergies or asthma.

14. LUXURIOUS FEEL

When it comes to fabric, wool is often thought of as being itchy and uncomfortable. That's because of poor processing. However, when processed properly, wool ensures a luxuriously soft feel and is a cut above in terms of the quality range. This high quality natural fiber is heat-resistant, so it's perfect for creating a cozy feeling that will keep you warm all winter long. Wool is also highly absorbent, so it's great for trapping moisture away from your skin. And because wool is so durable, your wool products will last you for years to come. So next time you're looking for a luxurious pillow, don't forget about wool!

15. A WOOL PILLOW THAT WILL HELP YOU COUNT SHEEP AND FALL ASLEEP FAST

If you can't manage to fall asleep, the smell and feel of wool underneath your head and mind will help you think of sheep. And EVERYONE knows counting sheep is the key to falling asleep.

Seriously though, due to the reasons listed above, a wool pillow can be a huge benefit to anyone suffering from insomnia.
